EXPRESSES GRATITUDE: “The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) plays a crucial role in strengthening Norway’s position as a leading maritime nation. For two years, Knut Arild Hareide has steered the NMA with confidence and expertise. I would like to thank him for the excellent work he has done, placing both digitalisation and improved safety on the agenda. I would also like to extend by best wishes for success in his new important role,” says Cecilie Myrseth, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy.

Hareide assumed the role of Director General of Shipping and Navigation for the Norwegian Maritime Authority on 1 January 2022. He vacates this position with immediate effect, and Alf Tore Sørheim, Head of the Department of Operative Supervision, will serve as the Acting Director General in the interim.

Acting Director General of Shipping and Navigation

The employees of the NMA were informed of Hareide’s resignation at a general meeting on Friday morning. Acting Director General of Shipping and Navigation, Alf Tore Sørheim, describes this as a sad day for the NMA, but he extends his best wishes to Hareide in his new position.

“He has been particularly concerned about seafarers, and efforts to prevent bullying and harassment have been among his top priorities. As a result, there is an ongoing change in the industry. Achieving this goal will take time, but the process has begun. Our values – trust, initiative and teamwork – have been important to Knut Arild Hareide. By embodying these values himself, he has contributed to change throughout the NMA,” says Sørheim.
