Zero emissions in the world heritage fjords by 2026 Below, you can read the Norwegian Maritime Authority’s proposed consultation document on the implementation of zero emissions requirement in the world heritage fjords.This proposal was submitted to the Ministry of Climate and Environment on 2 January 2023. The final consultation document will be circulated to the public for comments at a later date.

Report regarding pollution from shipping in world heritage fjords On assignment from the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) has coordinated and carried out a survey in order to map discharges and emissions in Norwegian fjords with heavy cruise traffic. The NMA's report to the Ministry outlines specific measures for reducing the emissions from all shipping activities in the areas.

Emissions to air Although shipping is regarded as a relatively eco-friendly form of transportation, emissions can be significant in areas with heavy ship traffic. Consequently, a number of measures have been initiated to prevent and reduce harmful emissions from ships.

With 90 percent of the global trade being transported by sea, the shipping industry constitutes a significant contribution to global trade and prosperity whilst having relatively little negative impact on the global environment.
Shipping is the most eco-friendly form of transport. Because of its large scale, however, the industry still poses a variety of environmental challenges. Consequently, continuous efforts are being made to limit pollution and other possible adverse effects from shipping, both in Norway and internationally.
