The key goals of the directorate are the safety for lives, health, vessel and the environment. In order to reach these aims it is vital to priorities rules and regulations that prevent accidents. Through information, development of legislation, supervision and controls the Norwegian Maritime Directorate works with the industry to prevent accidents.
If an incident should happen, despite of all the preventive work, it is vital to inform the industry about the circumstances and reasons concerning the accident, so that they can learn from the mistakes that caused the mishap. The Norwegian Maritime Directorates requirements on how the industry reports on such matters are developed so that experiences concerning accidents can be shared with the industry in a swift and easy way.
The information gathered is used to analyse accident trends and to identify measures needed to prevent further incidents from happening. The demands on accident reporting, together with the relevant forms, will be updated on the directorate’s webpage so that the shipping industry always has the relevant information at hand. In addition the webpage contains accident statistics based on reports submitted to the directorate. It is expected that this information is used actively by the industry to prevent accident. It is also expected that the information is incorporated in the industry's own safety systems.
When carrying out inspections and supervisions the Norwegian Maritime Directorate will therefore look especially at how the prevention of accidents and unwanted incidents are incorporated both on board ships and by the administration of the company.
