Legislation and International Relations

Large parts of the rules and regulations concerning the shipping industry are developed on the international arena. The Norwegian Maritime Directorate actively participates in several international organisations in order to influence Norwegian stands on shipping matters and shipping legislation. Examples of international organisations that the directorate participates in are IMO (International Maritime Organisation), ILO (the UN’s international workers organisation) and EMSA (the European Maritime Safety Agency).
As one of the worlds leading shipping nations Norway wishes to be in the forefront of the development of a safer and more environmental shipping industry. The Norwegian Maritime Directorate therefore has a vital and integral role to play in the development of international legislations and guide lines. Decisions made by the EU and other shipping organisations have an increasing effect on Norwegian Maritime legislation. Among other things the directorate has an important role to play in making sure that sound guide lines are in place when international legislation is enforced in Norwegian courts.
In the menu in the left of the page you will find an overview of the legislation that regulates the shipping industry
